Penang Celebrates: Chinese New Year with Kochabi @ Auto-City

Penangites kick off the celebration two days earlier than actual Chinese New Year and consider largest celebrations amongst the community in Penang by emphasize the theme “Kochabi”, Penang’s old flavors. Visitors will have a chance to watch some on stage performance like 24 Festive Drums, Chinese Folk Rhymes, Teochew Puppet Drama and other multicultural performances.

Kek Lok Si Display of Lights

The annual event and one of the main attractions in Penang during Chinese New Year. It is believed this act of faith will bring them peace, luck and prosperity.

Penang CNY Celebration 2019

Organized by Penang Chinese Clan Council, coordinated by Penang Cultural Inheritors Society, the event hopes to promote heritage and the arts of Chinese culture through street & on stage performances, exhibitions, games and workshops. The street event will take place at George Town, UNESCO World Heritage Site, number of ancestral temples and clan house will open their doors to showcase the rich Chinese culture. The theme for this year is “A Journey of Gratitude” with aims to give thanks to the ancestors for all their good deeds in contributing and protecting the locals over two centuries.

7th Ban Ka Lan Snake Temple CNY Culture Celebration 2019

Another great event fall on Saturday, this special prayer is also conducted to commemorate the birthday of Cheng Chooi Chor Soo Kong Deity of the temple. The ceremony is an annual event that attracts dedicated devotees not only from Penang but neighboring countries like Indonesia and Thailand to this famous Snake Temple which was formerly known as Ban Ka Lan in Hokkien. The main highlight for this event is the "Fire Watching" ceremony is a traditional ceremony to predict the economy outlook of Penang.

Hokkien New Year Celebrations

Fall on eve of the 9th day of Chinese New Year, also known as Hokkien New Year or “Ti Kong Seh” in Hokkien (Jade Emperor birthday). The locals will celebrate on a grand scale mainly by the Hokkien clan to commemorate their ancestors escape from ruthless army in ancient China. Activities and other preparations start as early as 7pm while prayers will start at 11pm with offerings of food, fruits, liquor and sugarcane stalks to the Jade Emperor God. Mass celebrations can be seen at Clan Jetties, Weld Quay Penang.

Penang Celebrates: Chap Goh Meh with a Bang

Ended the Chinese New Year celebrations with a Bang! Also known as Chinese Valentine’s Day, Chap Goh Meh (mean night of 15th day of Chinese New Year) event will have at Penang Esplanade with lot of activities such as cultural shows games and food selling to the visitors. Main highlight will be Mandarin Tossing Ceremony, to encourage young unmarries ladies throwing mandarin orange into the sea with their names and phone numbers (well, you bet!), in search blessing of a companion. Don’t forget to stay back until a breathtaking fireworks display!
